Moving on to film direction in 1953, Cacoyannis brought greek cinema to a worldwide audience and launched the international film careers of three legendary greek actresses: in “Stella” (1955) Melina Merkouri is a defiant cabaret singer who refuses to follow the convention of security through marriage and prefers to die in the hands of her paramour instead. In the film, Cacoyannis finds the pulse of greek pathos and tragedy beating beneath the grimy but charming façade of working-class neighborhoods in postwar Athens. His films immortalize the greek capital as it was in the immediate postwar years, before being engulfed by concrete in the development rush of the 1960s.

Cacoyannis also familiarized international audiences with the talent of stage prodigy Elli Lambeti (star of a “Windfall in Athens” and “A Girl in Black”). Irene Pappas starred in three Cacoyannis films inspired by Euripides: “The Trojan Women” (also starring Katherine Hepburn), “Elektra” and “Iphigenia” (both nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards).

Outside Greece, Cacoyannis is probably more famous for his adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’ “Zorba the Greek” (1964) starring Pappas and Anthony Quinn with music by Mikis Theodorakis. The film was nominated for three Academy awards and became forever associated with the tourist industry boom of the 1960s.

In his later years, Cacoyannis supervised the nighttime lighting of the Acropolis monuments ahead of the Athens Olympics in 2004 and founded the Cacoyannis Foundation in central Athens, dedicated to showcasing the works of younger artists. As to the subject of his own sexuality these were his comments: “I lived a good life even though I never started a family. I loved people and they loved me even more outside the conventional boundaries imposed by current morality. But most of all I was in love with my work.”
